Marie Antoinette famously said “let them eat cake” in response to the peasants not having any bread to eat during the French famine of 1789. Suggesting the peasants could eat cake if they were out of bread was like suggesting the poor eat filet mignon instead of minute steak. This insensitive comment apparently infuriated the starving lower class and prompted the French Revolution. Did you know Marie Antoinette may have never even utter these words and the quote was only attributed to the princess until 50 years after her death? The origins of this famous phrase are still vague but “let them eat cake” or “let them eat brioche” as it was originally written, apparently first appeared in a book published by Jean-Jacques Rousseau who may have invented the anecdote all together. Regardless of its validity, these words became a revolutionary symbol used throughout history to denounce the upper class as oblivious and out of touch.

Let Them Eat Cake is a variegated pink, purple, and warm brown pastel colour way dyed on our 80% Merino superwash and 20% nylon fingering base. This super squishy 8 ply merino nylon yarn is great for making socks and any other next of skin garments you can think of.

Please note, colour ways can vary by dye lot.

This yarn ships in 1-2 weeks, although I aim to keep this as short as possible. This yarn is hand-dyed in small batches, so no two skeins are exactly alike. I try to post pictures that accurately depict the colour way, however colours may vary from device to device. All yarn is hand washed until the water runs clear, but there could be slight bleeding the first few washes.

Care: Hand wash or delicate cycle. Do not bleach. Lay flat to dry.
